The Department of Histopathology was formally established in 2008, with the mission of providing advanced diagnostic services and supporting the clinical training of medical students. The department's growth over the years has been marked by important milestones, most notably the launch of its postgraduate program, which expanded the department's role in advancing medical knowledge and research. Improvements in turnaround time for diagnostic results demonstrate the department's commitment to service excellence, while its postgraduate program has been a significant asset to both the faculty and the medical community.

The leadership of the department has been instrumental in shaping its progress, with figures like Prof. Ughachukwu, Dean of the faculty, and former Heads of Department including Prof. DCD Anyiam, Prof. Chukwudi Okani, and the late Prof. A.I. Agbata. The current Acting Head of Department, Dr. Kingsley Madubuike, continues to build upon the legacy of his predecessors, aiming to elevate the department to new heights. Under Dr. Madubuike's leadership, the department is actively working towards establishing residency training, a step that would significantly enhance the academic and clinical training opportunities available to students and professionals alike.

While the department itself does not offer separate undergraduate or non-graduate programs, it is integral to the practical and theoretical training of students pursuing degrees in medicine. Admission to programs involving histopathology follows the general guidelines for the MBBS program. Prospective students must meet the requirements set by COOU’s Faculty of Medicine, including obtaining acceptable scores in the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and meeting other faculty-specific criteria. Additionally, students admitted into the program may defer, transfer, or register according to the procedures applicable within the MBBS program framework.
